TOURISM: A TOOL FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AT LOCAL AND NATIONAL LEVEL
INTRODUCTION and OBJECTIVE
Developments in industry and technology after the Second World War have changed the lifestyle of consumers. Improvements in society’s standards and The Freedom of travel brought about by globalization, prepared the ground for the increase in the number of people participating in tourism activities. Increasing in the number of people who want to visit different destinations has enabled the tourism sector to develop very rapidly and become an important sector for many countries. So much that the number of tourists around 300 million in the 1980s worldwide exceeded 700 million in 2000s and then 900 million in 2010.
As a result of the increasing number of people to be part of tourism ecosystem, that is one of the largest industries with nearly 1,4 billion overnight visitors of tourism services per year spending hundreds billions of dollars. Tourism industry also provides employment to over 100 million people worldwide. Therefore tourism is one of the sectors which has significant effects on the development of the local, national and global economies.
The upcoming book which is titled as “Tourism: A Tool for Economic Development at Local and National Level” will try to make an effort on consolidating interdisciplinary researches related to tourism and its effects on local, national and global economies. In this context it is aimed to include the studies carried out by scientists under the themes of tourism and economic development, tourism and social development, new trends in tourism industry and tourism marketing.
